President Obama will be in Paterson, NJ for four hours this afternoon to take a tour flooded areas of the city.Security will be tight today so expect delays. If you are in the Paterson area send us updates.

President Obama toured parts of flooded Wayne & Paterson today. The President assured that residents will receive assistance from FEMA after Hurricane Irene’s destruction.

 

Gov. Christie announced that all 21 counties in New Jersey are eligible for individual & public assistance from FEMA..The President also stopped at Fayette Avenue in Wayne that was hit hard by floods from the Pompton River..

 

The presidential motorcade traveled to Paterson's Passaic River, which peaked on Wednesday & forced nearly 4,000 people from their homes. Paterson's  unemployment rate is now at 16.4% the state's unemployment rate is 9.7%.

 

The president also stopped at a Lowe’s Store in Paterson to shake hands with volunteers who provided supplies & food through a Road to Recovery center.

Philander Hampton, 1 of 2 men accused of killing five Newark teens in August 1978, pleaded guilty to five counts of felony murder Tuesday in Superior Court in Essex County.

Hampton, 54, of Jersey City said he held a gun on two teens in a Camden Street house, and his cousin Lee Anthony Evans trapped three other boys there.

 

With the teens corralled into a closet that was then nailed shut, Evans set the house on fire, leaving all five boys to die, because he believed they had stolen a pound of marijuana from him.

 

The Essex County prosecutor recommended a 10-year sentence for Hampton.

 

Hampton could be eligible for parole after two years. Because he has been jailed since his March 2010 arrest.

 

Hampton is expected to testify against Evans, 58, who lives in Irvington.

 

His murder trial is scheduled to begin Oct. 21. Evans recently won the right to represent himself at trial.

 

Hampton is to be sentenced Sept. 23.

Police Chief Sheilah A. Coley is Newark's first female African American police chief.


She was sworn into duty August 18th at the New Hope Baptist Church.

 

There were only 15 women in the Newark Police Department when Sheilah Coley entered the academy in 1989, and none ranked above detective.

 

Coley has become the first female chief in the department’s 175-year history in 22 years

 

Coley, 48, is the first woman to become Newark’s top cop, Coley has been shuffled around to family members, lived in foster care & serving 3 years in the Air Force.

 

Coley said her rise shows anyone can overcome adversity.

Bamboozled: beware con artists after Hurricane Irene

It’s really an old story: scammers taking advantage of those in need, hoping to line their pockets.

#AJR News Irvington man, fractures spine trying to con customer at Livingston Mall

A man tried to con a woman out of 1,000 dollars and suffered a fractured spine while trying to get away. Posed as a Macy's employee Johnathan Johnson (37) injured himself when he leaped from the mall's second floor in an attempt to escape the woman's husband.

 

Livingston police Detective Sgt. Anthony Dippold said the incident occurred around 7:30pm on Saturday when police received a call of fraud at Macy's. Johnson allegedly approached the unidentified Maplewood woman and told her that he could purchase woman's business suits if she paid him 1,000 dollars in cash by applying his employee discount bringing the total to $400. 

 

The woman grew suspicious because he was not wearing a "Macy's" name tag. She asked an employee of the store who also did not recognize Johnson. When her husband arrived she pointed him out and as her husband began to approach a chase ensured. 

 

Johnson ran to the center of the mall where he jumped over the 2nd floor railing. About a 20 to 30 foot drop fractured his spine. He was taken by Livingston First Aid Squad to Morristown Medical Center. He will be charged with theft by deception upon release from the hospital, Dippold said.

Inside Traders Knew About Attacks Before They Happened

Right before the September 11th attacks some fishy business happened within the stock market and insurance firms. An “extraordinary” amount of put options were placed on United Airlines and American Airlines stocks, the same airlines that were hijacked during the attacks. Many speculate that traders were tipped off about the attacks, and profited from the tragedy. The Securities and Exchange Commission launched an insider trading investigation in which Osama Bin Laden was a suspect after receiving information from at least one Wall Street Firm.
